Spider’s head – what is the Netflix thriller about?

Spider's head Netflix Review

The movie ” Spider’s Head ” based on the book of the short story “Escape from Spiderhead” by George Saunders and directed by Joseph Kosinski (who just gave us the excellent ” Top Gun: Maverick “).

It tells the story of convicts living in the near future who are imprisoned in a state-of-the-art prison. The facility is run by the visionary genius Steve Abnesti (played by Chris Hemsworth), who allows his prisoners full freedom – there are no bars, cells or prison suits in the facility. Everyone lives here like in a hotel.

In return, Spiderhead inmates are subjected to experiments with mind-altering drugs They can do anything from mood elevation to increased desire or a sense of emotionally distressing fear and even paranoia. One of the prisoners subjected to the experiments is Jeff ( Miles Teller ), who, however, less and less like what is going on in the facility.

Unfortunately, not entirely. But maybe I’ll start with the more optimistic things, because “Spider’s Head”, although it is not an outstanding film, is not a failed work either. A lot of things turned out quite well here. First of all, it was possible to capture the sterile atmosphere associated with this type of dystopian techno-thrillers .

The whole thing is also helped by a great soundtrack, which consists of more and less known pop hits from the 70s and 80s. Photos for which Claudio Miranda is responsible, showing the mostly closed and sterile spaces of the Spiderhead facility, where the action of the film takes place, look great. Directing is also good.

Joseph Kosinski is a really skilled craftsman, you can see for yourself by watching “Top Gun: Maverick” in cinemas, while in the case of “Spider’s Head” everything is much more intimate, but Kosinski is able to give the audience a perfectly tailored product under these conditions. At the same time, he skillfully guides the actors, and they really give a lot.

“Spider’s head” is actually an acting sparring between Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, the result of which is a draw – they both did a great job, their characters are ambiguous, each of them has their own convincing motivations and you really watch them very well. Acting is the strongest link in this production , because the characters in the background also fared great.

The plot is quite intriguing and interesting (although it is by no means a completely original story), but only in the first half. The closer to the finale, the “Spider’s Head” unfortunately deviates from the route of interesting questions and issues into alleys full of banal and predictable solutions. It seems as if the filmmakers stood a bit astride.

On the one hand, they wanted to make an ambitious cinema that deals with topics related to the manipulation of people and emotions (and this topic can be spilled really widely on the mass media, politics or Big Pharma), by technocrats and geniuses-madmen who want to control humanity and move beyond moral boundaries, to not entirely fair and safe practices of pharmaceutical companies.

On the other hand, when “Spider’s Head” aroused our appetites for interesting and engaging cinema, it takes your foot off the gas pedal in no time and lands in safe territory. It’s a pity, because the first half announced something much more. At some point, the authors could not clearly decide which genre box they want to hit.

Most of “Spider’s Head” seems to be a full-fledged thriller, although in the second half the film deviates into the territory of something like a black comedy or not very successful satire. And the finale itself seems to be taken out of the movies about “Austin Powers”. A terribly strange species volt.

Is it worth watching the movie Spider’s Head?

So in the end, Kosinski’s film disappoints, but honestly, it’s not a huge disappointment. As I mentioned above, the whole thing is so well done and played that it is really good to watch. So “Spider’s Head” is average, but a bit of a higher-end one. It has the potential to be something more, and it’s a pity that it didn’t, but what we got to watch should provide viewers with sufficiently successful and non-binding entertainment for the upcoming weekend evenings.
