Exactly 20 years after the premiere of “Spider-Man” by Sam, Raimi returns to the director’s stool, this time in the film “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of insanity”. Is this a successful return?

Doctor Strange in the multiverse of insanity – the plot of the 28th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Sometime after the events of the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Stephen Strange meets a young girl on his way, who is in mortal danger from … an octopus-like creature. This abstract event is just the beginning of a crazy adventure. The girl’s name is America Chavez and she can travel between alternative universes. It turns out, however, that Wanda Maximoff – Scarlet Witch also wants to use her powers .
Doctor Strange in the multiverse of insanity – opinion about the new Marvel film
Ultimately, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” is disappointing. In many respects. First of all, this movie is chaotic, and I don’t really think it is intended. The action runs like Quicksilver after taking the stimulant, but it doesn’t make much sense. Rami and the rest of the team promise us a multiverse in the title, but what we watch on the screen is simply a festival of missed opportunities.
The alternative worlds presented in the film are devoid of imagination and any inventiveness, but give the impression of banal creations straight from animated series for children aged 8. On the one hand, what to expect from a production in which Disney’s Mickey Mouse dipped his fingers, but on the other, this movie is also the most brutal of all Marvel and Disney productions so far.
I bet that when it goes to Disney +, it will not do without the censorship of a large number of scenes. The closer to the finale, the “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” becomes a horror film. There are even scenes reminiscent of some of the hyper-brutal sequences in Amazon’s “Invicible” series. I was honestly surprised that the studio agreed to such a thing. I just don’t know if it was a positive surprise.
After all, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” is a horror film, at least in the third act, but it’s not a Legacy of Hereditary level horror or even Raimi’s Deadly Dead. It is rather just a B-class bogeyman, closer to “Gates to Hell” by the same director. If you are also expecting a dozen unexpected cameos, then without revealing the details, apart from a few characters already confirmed before the premiere, there is not much waiting for you here. And the movie itself, as a whole, does not treat us with anything that the trailer would not have shown before. But Marvel and Disney cleverly used the opportunity to fuel the appetite and hype of the audience, especially shortly after the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home. And while many of you may think the trailer is just a snippet of the movie, and the movie has a ton of surprises, the truth is that it shows most of the key scenes.
Sam Raimi in the multiverse of insanity
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” , of course, in its own way also a work that capitalizes on nostalgia, but at the meta level. The director is Sam Raimi, who is one of the pioneers of modern American horror of the 1980s (“Dead Bad”, of course), and 21st century superhero cinema (“Spider-Man”). These two sensitivities have merged with each other in the new Marvel production, but although it sounds intriguing on paper, the end result is that “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” is a rather insanely schizophrenic work that does not know what it wants to show. As a matter of fact, this movie is the end of the main plot of the series ” WandaVision“(Which could be watched before the screening) plus, to a lesser extent, the continuation of the threads from the first” Doctor Strange “. The rest is the presentation of the new character of Amerika Chavez and journeys through boring and bizarre multiverse. Throughout the screening, I had the impression that this film is an introduction to something bigger, although after the screening I say that I don’t know what for.

The directing, surprisingly, “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of insanity” does not knock you down. There are some interesting sequences here, but none will be remembered for long. Everything else is either formal mediocrity or even assembly inefficiency. A few scenes are visually impressive during the mental skirmishes of Strange and Wanda, but there are also those in which he blows with monstrous kitsch and weak CGI.
After all, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity” is at best a Marvelian medium . Somewhere around Thor: The Dark World. Although I have no doubts that the mass of fanboys will fall in love with it and appreciate the horror scenes. For me, however, it was too shallow and chaotic. Thus, still the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe failed to convince me of its existence.
