Xiaomi 12S series officially presented – Leica enters the game
We already had manufacturers on the market who collaborated with Leica, but Xiaomi is doing it for the first time. This is good news, but in we are unlikely to be happy about it. The new smartphones are intended for the Chinese market and there is little chance that they will ever leave it at all. One can only hope that a similar type of specification will appear in other Xiaomi smartphones over time.
The new devices are similar to each other, and the differences between the specifications are not huge. Xiaomi 12S is the smallest of smartphones, but still with an AMOLED display or refreshing up to 120 Hz . Added to this is fast charging and the latest flagship Snapdragon on board. The Pro and Ultra smartphones are additionally equipped with chipsXiaomi Surge for energy management and fast charging.
All smartphones from the Xiaomi 12S series are to use Leica Summicron lenses and support Leica imaging profiles . In addition, there are two new photo modes: Leica Authentic Look and Leica Vibrant Look . As for the most pampered of the phones, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, its main camera uses an 8P aspherical lens. This is to eliminate phenomena such as flares, ghosting and chromatic aberration. The camera module itself also has an anti-reflective coating.
Cameras in the Xiaomi 12S series – photography is to enter a higher level
In addition to the flagship specification of all smartphones in the series, it is the photographic possibilities that distinguish the devices from other devices from the manufacturer’s portfolio. This is how the main features of the new smartphones are presented in the press release.
- Xiaomi 12S Ultra is equipped with a 1-inch IMX989 sensor from Sony, with a Quad-Bayer matrix with pixels up to 1.6 μm. Thanks to pixel binning, the pixel reaches 3.2 μm, which reduces noise, extends the dynamic range, increases the amount of light captured, and also obtains an overall better image in low light conditions.
- Xiaomi 12S Ultra is the first Android device to support Dolby Vision HDR video recording and playback. This means vivid colors, a high contrast ratio and richer details.
- Xiaomi 12S Ultra uses HyperOIS optical stabilization, which is of particular importance for video recording. HyperOIS uses the gap between the two frames to trigger stabilization and correct the position of the optics. As a result, the image is stable and has a natural character, without artifacts and unnatural movement.
- Xiaomi 12S and Xiaomi 12S Pro use the IMX707 sensor from Sony (1 / 1.28 inch, 2.44 μm pixels after grouping). Thanks to the Xiaomi AI Image Solution and Xiaomi ProFocus technologies, this matrix starts up quickly and efficiently records the image in a continuous mode. Both of these smartphones have the “All-Scene Snapshot” function implemented, which makes it easier to capture the optimal moment in the frame.
